Oral-Systemic Connections

How the plaque on your teeth may be connected to plaque in your arteries

Several cohort studies have shown that periodontal disease is associated with an increased risk of stroke [2–5]. A recent meta-analysis of 2 cohort studies found that periodontal disease increased the risk of ischemic stroke by 1.6-fold [6]. Gum disease may increase your risk of colorectal cancer.

new study, published in Cancer Prevention Research, included 42,486 men and women participating in two large continuing health surveys. Over the past several decades, the participants had periodically reported information on health and diet, including reports of gingivitis and tooth loss.

It has now been established that oral pathogens, inhabiting in deep pockets of the gum line, are responsible for:

Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease

By 2050, 13.5 million people in the United States will live with Alzheimer’s disease unless early diagnosis and treatment can delay the onset of the disease. Porphymonous Gingivalis, a neuroinflammatory pathogen, is found in the gum line.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

For people with heart disease of blood vessels, inflammation caused by gum disease can add to that process. Quanotech’s revolutionary gum line scanner, PerioAlert™, identifies “pockets” in the gum line where germs that interact with coronary plaque are found.

Stroke

Stroke

Studies show that having gum disease doubles your chances of suffering a stroke. Bleeding gums and inflammation from gum disease can lead to changes in the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain. A reduction or blockage of blood flow and oxygen to the brain leads to a stroke.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis affects joint linings, causing painful swelling. Over long periods of time, the inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis can cause bone erosion and joint deformity.

Colon Rectal Cancer

Colon Rectal Cancer

The oral periodontopathic bacterium Fusobacterium nucleate has been repeatedly associated with colorectal tumors. F. nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis have identified several virulence mechanisms that promote both bacterial survival and carcinogenesis.

Compromised Diabetic Function

Compromised Diabetic Function

If you’re living with diabetes, your immune system isn’t as strong as you might like it to be. That makes you more susceptible to gum disease. The worst part about gum disease is that it can raise your blood sugar. And that makes it harder to control diabetes.

Changing the Oral Health Market

Quanotech was started on the premise that there had to be a better way to take findings from a periodontal records visit and systematize, streamline, and increase the accuracy of the findings. The founder, Dr. Jeffrey M. Rosenberg, had adopted early research of Dr. Paul Keyes, of the then (1976-77) National Institute for Dental Research (NIDR) which led to many current principals for oral health – namely the baking soda and peroxide method of oral “disinfection”, and the concept that findings of the periodontal examination related to distant systemic diseases. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. PerioAlert™ is an early detection digital chairside scanner. This time in the 1970’s was the emergence of what is now Oral-Systemic Health (OSH). On February 9, 2004, Quanotech LLC was formed in the state of Pennsylvania.

Quanotech has continued to develop technologies that add trust to the doctor/patient relationship.

Quanotech supports research in the areas of periodontal diseases (PD), Oral-Systemic Health (OSH), dental implantology, digital design, on-line education and orthodontics.

Looking Towards the Future

The New Oral Health Market

A recent in-depth study reveals a strong and growing market for oral health-care products and services. The world oral care market in 2020 was valued at $53 billion in US dollars and it is estimated that the market will be valued at $96 billion by the end of 2031.

The global market for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) treatment will more than double in value from $4.9 billion in 2013 to reach an estimated $13.3 billion by 2023, representing a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.50%, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData.

Quanotech is poised to be a leader in the new emerging Oral Health market.

PerioAlert™

Diseases of the Gum Line

When the studies of Oral-Systemic health (OSH) determined that gum disease-causing bacteria found in the gum line were related to diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), and stroke, PerioAlert became an essential component of diagnosing periodontal disease (PD).

About 700 kinds of microorganisms exist in the human mouth, and these microbes constitute the human oral microbiota. It is one of the most complex microbial communities in the human body.

There is evidence that oral microbiota is also closely related to systemic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), adverse pregnancy outcomes, stroke, and cardiovascular disease.

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. PerioAlert is an early detection digital chair-side scanner.
